Handwriting Analysis, Examination, Identification:
What is Handwriting Analysis?
The Library of Congress classifies the study of handwriting as a subtopic of psychology. The study of behavior profiling through written communication is based on trait theory, and the methodology has been formalized as a science or specialized body of knowledge known as handwriting analysis.
Handwriting analysis is a proven method for obtaining accurate, in-depth information about the personality, character, and state of mind of a person of interest by examining the letter and stroke formation of their handwriting. Graphoanalysts refer to handwriting as "brainwriting" because it is primarily a function of the brain, not the muscles. |

Handwriting analysis requires the informed examination and interpretation of such handwriting features as handwriting slant, pressure, individual letter formation, spacing, and script size. In 1998 the U.S. Department of Justice conducted the most extensive study of handwriting, examination, identification ever completed. The fascinating results of the study, conducted by the University of New York Buffalo, were published in the New York Times in 2002. |
| They showed, for one thing, that handwriting samples could provide the identity of individual writers with the same degree of accuracy (98%) as fingerprinting. This study documented the fact that individual handwriting contains characteristics unique to the writer. Interpretation of those characteristics by a trained specialist like Ron Rice can produce a level of information and insight into personality and character that can surprise even the writer himself/herself. |

Ron Rice's work is based on extensive European and American graphoanalytic study, training and forensic fieldwork. For three years (1993-1996), he was the sole training director of handwriting specialists through the American Board of Forensic Handwriting Examiner and the American College of Forensic Examiners (ABFE/ACFE).
"People ask me if handwriting analysis is like fortune telling," he says. 'Absolutely not'. It is obviously useful in fraud and forgery cases, but the value of handwriting assessment is far more than individual identification. For example, lawyers use handwriting analysis in jury selection to better understand the personality and character of potential jurors.
"A handwriting specialist can examine prospective jurors' handwriting and tell the lawyers who is likely to be most influenced or unmoved by their presentation," he says. Handwriting spotlights specific traits that are important in relationships, such as jealousy, resentment, self-deceit, and enthusiasm, Rice says. For specialists who can interpret it, handwriting reveals information about sexuality, emotional intimacy, and capacity for fidelity/infidelity.
